Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam or Styrofoam™ is great for making light weight, detailed crafts and more. Unlike packing foam, our EPS foam is a higher density and can be carved & sanded to get the shape you want with. We work with EPS foam on a regular basis and create sculptures, signage, & architectural installments like crown molding, props, and more. If you have a specific size that you would like cut, let us know the length x height x width and we will be happy give you a quote.
Here are a few Tricks of the Trade:
Tools great for shaping polystyrene foam
- 80 Grit Sandpaper
- Wire Brush
- Serrated Knife
- Hot Wire
- Heat Gun (gives the surface a cool rock texture)
- Hot Knife
- Rasp Router
If you want a more "rock" like surface, a 50/50 (give or take) blend of a latex primer and plaster joint compound rolled on will get a real hard coating. Refrain from using aerosol or anything that contains high levels of VOC directly on polystyrene. Chemicals can break down/ dissolve polystyrene. Kilz® Max Water-Based Primer contains low VOC and makes a great primer when prepping your polystyrene surface for a coating. It will help strengthen the surface and will allow your hardcoating to adhere better.
